Facial‑Flex® – Frequently Asked Questions

What is Facial‑Flex® and for whom is it suitable?

Facial‑Flex® is a facial exerciser which tones and tightens the face, chin and neck muscles. It is suitable for any person (male or femaIe) who wishes to combat muscle sagging or a loss of muscle tone due to advancing years or weight loss. It is also helpful to musicians who wish to strengthen their facial muscles when playing a wind instrument.

What is the principle behind Facial‑Flex®?

Facial‑Flex® works by challenging the facial muscles by following the principles of ‘progressive resistance’, in a similar way to undertaking a body strength workout at the gym. The ‘facial training session’ consists of two minutes twice a day of contracting and releasing against the resistance of an orthodontic band (in latex) attached to the centre of the device which is placed between the two corners of the mouth.

As the muscles become stronger it is important to increase the resistance provided by the band. There are three different band strengths: No. 1 standard, No. 2 strong and No. 3 extra strong. It is important to maintain the resistance provided by the band by replacing it weekly.

How was Facial‑Flex® invented?

Facial‑Flex® was initially designed to soften the scar tissue of patients having suffered facial burns. When it became clear that the device also had a beneficial re-toning action on the parts of the face not affected by the burns, it started to be widely used for cosmetic purposes to fight muscle sagging and the resulting signs of aging. In rehabilitation, Facial‑Flex® is used to complement conventional treatments, when exercise is recommended.

At the request of the FDA (USA), Facial‑Flex® underwent several independent clinical trials to substantiate its various claims. Studies carried out in the early 1990s showed that Facial‑Flex® had improved muscle strength (+250%), skin elasticity (+32.5%) and blood circulation (+10%), in just eight weeks.

The second trial also showed that muscle strength improved significantly – from +75% to +250% – if the band on the device was changed weekly.

Why exercise the facial muscles?

As we become older, muscle mass reduces and muscles become weaker and thinner. This is referred to as loss of muscle tone. Facial‑Flex® offers a simple, 100% natural and highly logical solution to counter this phenomenon: exercise through resistance training.

We exercise our body muscles, so why not work our facial muscles? Facial‑Flex® trains a fine and intricate network of thirty different muscles, from below the eyes to the upper part of the chest.

What results can be achieved?

Through regular daily use and by progressing to increased resistance by using stronger bands as soon as you feel able to do so, Facial‑Flex® will help the face to become firmer and to look more youthful. With an improved facial tone, a more defined facial contour, fuller lips, a lifting of sagging cheeks and jowls, an improved definition of the cheekbones and reduced double chin, the benefits will normally be seen in a few months.

Facial‑Flex® also helps to firm the neck and décolletage. An added benefit is that regular use of the device stimulates blood circulation which improves skin texture and elasticity. The ‘before’ and ‘after’ photographs featured on the website show the transformation of the trialists after six months’ of using Facial‑Flex®.

Why choose a Facial‑Flex® facial exerciser?

Facial‑Flex® is easy to use and its effectiveness has been clinically proven. It is quick and easy to use and 100% natural. Because Facial‑Flex® works against the resistance provided by the latex band in the centre of the device, (just like a workout at the gym), each contraction is effective and powerful at strengthening the facial muscles. As a result, each facial workout can be completed in just two minutes twice a day (or 120 contractions morning and evening).

Does it work immediately?

Our muscles reduce in strength and size over time so, just as with physical exercise, it is unrealistic to expect muscles to transform instantly. Progress should be noticeable after a few months if you use the device every day. If you are able to progress to the No. 3 extra strong bands quite quickly, you may be able to see a difference in a few weeks.

Initially, using Facial‑Flex® can seem to be too easy. It may also cause salivation but this can be reduced if you keep your head upright as you exercise. As soon as you are familiar with the action of using the device, progress to a stronger band. The stronger the band the harder the facial muscles work and therefore the greater the benefit to your muscle tone and facial contour. As well as using your Facial‑Flex® every day remember to change your band every week to maintain the strength and effectiveness of your workout. In the clinical trial, this was proven to be particularly important in increasing the strength of the muscles. The first results of toning may be noticeable after six to eight weeks of daily use but you will find excellent firming results within four to six months and can continue ad infinitum.

Will Facial‑Flex® cause wrinkles?

Facial‑Flex® does not create or cause wrinkles. For maximum benefit and fastest results it is important to increase the strength of the band as soon as the muscles around your mouth can manage the increased resistance. If your Facial‑Flex® band is fully expanding when you contract your mouth this indicates that the band strength is too light and can cause unnecessary puckering of the lips. To speed up your progress it is suggested that you move onto the next band strength to enable you to work your muscles harder.

Does the Facial‑Flex® remove wrinkles, folds or lines?

Facial‑Flex® will markedly improve the firmness of your face and rejuvenate your look. Whilst it will not remove wrinkles, folds or lines because these are “inscribed” in the skin, as you build up and strengthen your facial muscles this will have the effect of ‘filling out’ wrinkles and folds to some degree. As the muscles above the lips increase in size, your vertical lip lines should become less noticeable. As you will see from our ‘before’ and ‘after’ photographs, Facial‑Flex® is very effective in lifting and re-contouring the face, neck and chin area. The key to your success is progressing to the strongest band you can manage and to change the band or bands weekly.

Will Facial‑Flex® definitely work?

To choose to use a Facial‑Flex®, one must feel the need for it. Except in cases of weight-loss, when the use of the device is recommended regardless of age, it seems unnecessary use to Facial‑Flex® before the first signs of aging and facial sagging are noticed. For Facial‑Flex® to be effective the training sessions must be done on a regular basis, because if done only occasionally, they will not yield noticeable result.

There are cases where attempting to firm up the face to reduce wrinkles with facial exercise is more difficult. For instance, when the face is damaged (over-exposure to the sun, smoking, unhealthy lifestyle, severe hormonal loss or a combination of several of these factors) and when the natural reserves of collagen and elastin are exhausted. The skin, dermis and muscles then combine to form a very thin tissue and facial gymnastics with or without Facial‑Flex® generally yields a poor result. It is advised to use your common sense, to go to our web site for information in order to make sure that Facial‑Flex® will suit your personal case.

Finally, as demonstrated by the ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures, the results will vary from one person to another and will depend on the regularity of usage and the strength of the band used, on age and on the physical condition of the user.

How Do I Use the Flex-bands?

Facial‑Flex® cannot operate without Flex-bands. Flex-bands are orthodontic bands made from latex. They are available in three different strengths: No. 1, standard, (6oz). No. 2, strong, (8oz) and No. 3, extra-strong, (l4oz).

To maximize the benefit to your facial muscle strength it is important to progress the resistance provided by the band you use on your Facial‑Flex®. Using a progressively stronger band encourages your muscles to work harder. Some people are able to do this quite quickly.

Here is a table giving details of how you can progress your facial workout:

Resistance Band Resistance
No.1 6oz
No.2 8oz
2 x No.1 12oz
1 x No.1 plus 1 x No.2 14oz
No.3 14oz
2 x No.2 16oz
1 x No.1 plus 1 x No.3 20oz
1 x No.2 plus 1 x No.3 22oz
2 x No.3 24oz

Do not use more than two bands on the device!

In a clinical trial it was proven that greatest effect of Facial‑Flex® was achieved by changing the band weekly.

Advice for Women: Start exercising with the band No. 1 (6oz) for a few days. Then switch to the band No. 2 (8oz). Later, continue to work with band No. 2 or use two No. 1 bands (+/- 12oz) on the device, or switch to band No. 3 (14oz). This will depend on your age, physical condition and individual strength. Some women are able to progress to a No. 3 band within a few days.

Advice for Men: Start exercising with one No. 1 band (6oz) for a day or so then switch to one No. 2 band, then to two No. 1 bands (+/- 12oz) on the device or to band No. 3 (14oz). See table above.

Initial Treatment and Maintenance Treatment

Initial Treatment: please read the instructions for use. Use twice a day, two minutes each time. The firmness will depend on how regularly you exercise during this period and how regularly your change your bands.

Maintenance Treatment: as soon as the desired firmness is obtained, you can switch to a maintenance programme and use Facial‑Flex® only once a day to maintain the results obtained. Use the strongest band you can manage and remember to change the band or bands regularly.

Advice to people with facial disabilities

Talk about the Facial‑Flex® facial exercise to your physician or surgeon.

In the case of a muscular imbalance, Facial‑Flex® will have a tendency to drop on the side where the muscles are impaired. Since the Facial‑Flex® butts stick out of the corners of the mouth, use your index fingers to keep the Facial‑Flex® straight in your mouth and to help you do the contractions.

Start working with the resistance-band No.1. Proceed step by step and at your own pace. Only switch to Resistance bands No. 2 or No. 3, when you feel ready.

Do facial muscles hurt after exercising?

You may feel that you have been exercising, especially at the beginning, which is normal with any type of muscular exercise. Follow the instructions. Do not skip any stage. Do not exercise too much. Rest your mouth for a day or two if necessary.

Is my Facial‑Flex® dismantled or broken?

Facial‑Flex® is broken if one of the spheres in the centre of the device has broken off. If no part is broken but your Facial‑Flex® comes apart, it is just dismantled and it needs to be reassembled. Try to reassemble the device yourself by following the instructions on this website.
